I was at the seafood dept today waiting in line when one of the HEB ladies wa waiting on an HEB employee. The employee asked for fish and what did she think was best and freshest that day.

The lady told her she never bought the fish because it has worms in it. She said she was cutting fish and had seen them. I interrupted and said I had over-heard her conversation and she said it was common in all fish product and the USDA whatever department inspected the fish said it was okay and not harmful. I don't want my family eating that.

Do you? I also just read that Mahi-Mahi has dangerous levels of mercury in it and it's a fish you should avoid. Look it up on the internet.

HEB doesn't care as long as you buy it. They make all these claims but the fact is they just have good PR and media people to make them look good.

"Worms" in fish are just common parasites. They ARE totally common and harmless, unless there are a large amount of them in the meat.

2-3 per fillet is totally normal. I gaurantee that you've eaten much worse things in your life and not even realized it. I would rather eat a couple harmless "worms" with my fresh fish than ANYTHING that is included in fast food, which I'm sure you've had in your life. I also like the fact that you've apparently done your "internet research" on the mercury levels in mahi mahi, but ZERO research on parasites.

You just chose to get grossed out and take to a *** website to post uneducated opinions about product. Nice job, ***.

When buying seafood, educate yourself. Some, not most.

Not all, some. Some fish do have worms, they are usually in the belly of river run fish or nematodes in the flesh. Hence why you cook it to 145 or deep freeze at xx degrees for xx days for sushi grade. Again, take time to educate yourself.

Americans are so ignorant with seafood. Mercury is present in all predatory fish, get over it. Harmful levels in Mahi-Mahi?

Again, educate yourself.

There is also mercury in tuna. That is not hebs fault, that is all of certain types of fish everywhere you buy it. That's why pregnate women are warned about eating it.

I personally love my Heb seafood department, it is always clean and well maintained I trust Heb's seafood. My husband has been fishing for over 50 years well he calls it fishing I call feeding the fish.

Anywhoo the larger fish do have copepods and you don't want to eat those but since the complainant didn't actually purchase seafood from Heb with worms this complaint just appears to be someone bored and doesn't realized that the FDA allows for macaroni and noodle products to have average of 225 insect fragments or more per 225 grams. Popcorn may have 20 or more gnawed grains per pound and rodent hair is found in 50 percent or more of the subsamples.

Chocolate has insect filth the average is 60 or more insect fragments per 100 grams when 6 100-gram subsamples are examined OR any 1 subsample contains 90 or more insect fragments. Rodent filth: Average is 1 or more rodent hairs per 100 grams in 6 100-gram subsamples examined.

I work in Real Estate, I don't work for HEB. Why don't you do some research and check it out for yourself.

Maybe you work there, maybe you are the Seafood Manager and are trying to make people believe this isn't possible. Sorry HEB employee you can't hide from the truth.

Do your research.....

I have recently noticed a rather large amount of small worms in the fresh cod I am buying. I have tried to take them out as much as I can and of course have spoken to my fish supplier about them, but he assures me they are harmless.

However, I don't believe my customers would be as assured. Is it okay to serve this fish, taking into account I might miss a worm or two?

Parasites in fish are common. In short, your fishmonger could have done a better job of pulling them out (unless you bought them whole). They are not deemed harmful if cooked properly (see the FAO link below).

There are guidelines and standards about the number of Nematodes in a given amount of fish.

Some types of fish are more susceptible than others, so you may wish to change your order from COD and Monkfish to something else.

Here is a document from FAO (Food and Agriculture Organization of United Nations). It explains how the worms get there, the safety precautions and how to avoid serving them.
